Bio-Diesel Fuel

Biodiesel is renewable fuel manufactured from vegetable oils, animal fats, or recycled restaurant greases. It is safe, biodegradable, and produces less air pollutants than petroleum-based diesel. Biodiesel can be used in existing diesel engines with little or no modification in its pure form or blended with petroleum diesel. Nowadays with the excess consumption of resource and the deterioration of the environment, people believe that biodiesel is one of the most promising alternate energy sources. The biodiesel is being recognized with rapid development. Since the passage of the Energy Policy Act of 2005, biodiesel production reached 3.8million tons. In 2007, biodiesel production capacity was growing rapidly, with an average annual growth rate from 2002-06 of over 40%.In the UK, the Renewable Transport Fuel Obligation obliges suppliers to include 5% renewable fuel in all transport fuel sold in the UK by 2010.

Biodiesel Compared to Petroleum Diesel

Advantages

Disadvantages

  • ● Domestically produced from non-petroluem, renewable resources
  • ● Can be used in most diesel engines, especially newer ones
  • ● Less air pollutants (other than nitrogen oxides) and greenhouse gases
  • ● Biodegradable
  • ● Non-toxic
  • ● Safer to handle
  • ● Use of blends above B5 not yet warrantied by auto makers
  • ● Lower fuel economy and power (10% lower for B100, 2% for B20)
  • ● Currently more expensive
  • ● More nitrogen oxide emissions
  • ● B100 generally not suitable for use in low temperatures
  • ● Concerns about B100's impact on engine durability
